Street Photography Proverbs

Journal Entry: Tue Mar 11, 2014, 5:23 AM
Rawr Plz

It's better to have a camera and not needed,
than to need a camera and not have it.

Yellow-Green Bullet - F2U!

A camera is a street photographer's best friend.

Yellow-Green Bullet - F2U!

A poor street photographer always blames his camera.

Yellow-Green Bullet - F2U!

A street photographer is not recognized in his own land.

Yellow-Green Bullet - F2U!

Walking street photographer gathers no moss.

Yellow-Green Bullet - F2U!

A good street photograph is mightier than a sword.

Yellow-Green Bullet - F2U!

All good things come to the street photographers who wait.

Yellow-Green Bullet - F2U!

All that is shot on the street is not street photography.

Yellow-Green Bullet - F2U!

All shooting and no play makes street photographer a dull boy.

Yellow-Green Bullet - F2U!

A street shot per day keeps boredom away.

Yellow-Green Bullet - F2U!

Another day, another street shot.

Yellow-Green Bullet - F2U!

Good street photographs don't grow in trees.

Yellow-Green Bullet - F2U!

You can't get good street photographs by sitting in front of
your computer reading stupid deviantart Journals,
so go out there with your camera!

Street, patience and a delightful DD surprise!

Journal Entry: Thu Feb 20, 2014, 12:19 PM
Thank you for this honor, Batgirl and Mary.

Sometimes in street photography you find your location, your setting and then you wait. You wait for the right moment or the right person or the right something to appear. There might be several 'right ones' and you can also miss your opportunities, your position might be unoptimal, your reflexes might fail you, your camera might fail you or a thousand other things might go wrong.

Street photography is often a fast reaction to something that you see but it is also about persistance and patience. On February Challenge at The Yard Collective the theme is SINS but I also would like to emphasize the importance of virtues as well, of which PATIENCE is one very important virtue. This DD-awarded shot 'Headache' didn't born by accident (well partly, of course it did but..) but by being patient and waiting for that 'right one'.

Have patience, my fellow street shooters.

Soviet Rangefinder

Journal Entry: Mon Feb 17, 2014, 1:18 PM
I just got myself a Soviet FED 3 rangefinder camera from the 1960's. I'll feed it with some Tri-X and see how it behaves. I'll be bothering your inboxes in due time. :D

The founder of FED camera factory was also the founder of Cheka so I don't know should I be laughing or crying.

Monthly Street Challenge - February

Journal Entry: Fri Jan 31, 2014, 9:19 PM

In 2014 The-Yard-Collective launches Monthly Street Challenge with a new theme each month.

The February theme is: SINS.

Consider the theme from all aspects. What is it? What does it mean? What could it be? What could it become through your mind and eyes? How could you interpret it perhaps in a new way? Is there a side of it we have not yet seen? Is it too obvious in itself? Is it possible to twist it and turn it and make it something else, something new and inspiring? These are the kind of thoughts that should be going through your head every time a new theme is being announced.

Just to get your thought process going, let's remind ourselves which are the seven deadly sins; lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy & pride. That list alone should be a fountain of inspiration for a street photographer!

Submit your Challenge photographs into The-Yard-Collective Favourites: ‘FEBRUARY Challenge’ folder. The Challenge folder will be open for submissions between 1st and 21st of February. All submissions to that folder will be automatically approved without the regular voting system and there is no limit on how many photographs you can submit, so please, please, please; use your best judgment and consideration and submit only what you really consider to be good street photography !

You may submit old or new photographs, although we highly encourage you to go out with your camera and shoot new photographs for each particular Challenge. That’s part of the fun and the main idea of the Challenge!

The best photographs of the month will be featured during the announcement of the next month’s theme. There are no prizes in these Challenges, only Fun, Fame and Glory! The best, i.e. featured photographs will also be moved from the Challenge folder into the Yard Featured folder and a new Challenge folder is being created for the next month’s Challenge while the folder of the previous month is being deleted.

Enough talking. Now grab your camera, get out there and SHOOT! :D

Moments Before Mutilation

Journal Entry: Sun Jan 5, 2014, 4:37 AM
Finnish photographer Meeri Koutaniemi visited Kenya to document a circumcision ritual of two young girls. Her photographs were featured in the following article in the Finnish leading newspaper Helsingin Sanomat: www.hs.fi/datajournalismi/Hetk… The article is titled 'Moments before mutilation'. Unfortunatelly it is only available in Finnish but you can always use Google Translator, right?

This black and white imagery is at the same time both beautiful and painful to look at.

YEAR 2013 ON MY STREET

Journal Entry: Sun Dec 29, 2013, 2:44 PM

It's about time to wrap things up. Another year has passed. Thousands of shots and a few good ones there too. Lots of walks and driving around town looking for that meaningful something. For sure many missed opportunities along the way also. Many nice memories from different locations. I can still remember the feelings and weather during the important shots. I always do. Those images in my mind stay so clear I can taste it rather than remember it. It's part of the fun and keeps me going, in a small way trying to cheat our dying destiny. Making pictures is what I truly love. That reminds me of something that one of the best photographers of our times, Mr Gregory Heisler once said; "If your only expectation is the satisfaction of making a picture, it [photography] will never let you down. Because every time you make a picture, you're getting that juice from it". That juice is the nectar for me and I have a thirst for it. I usually refer to photography as making pictures rather than taking a photograph, since I think you can't take anything from this world. You can only make something. In April this year I got my Fuji X100s and haven't been using the Nikon gear much ever since. Let's see what next year brings. Lots of new juice hopefully!

Happy New year!

Monthly Street Challenge - January

Journal Entry: Mon Dec 23, 2013, 1:39 PM

In 2014 The-Yard-Collective announces Monthly Street Challenge with a new theme each month.

The January theme is: ‘ REFLECTIONS ‘.

Consider the theme from all aspects. What is it? What does it mean? What could it be? What could it become in your mind and in your eyes? How could you interpret it perhaps in a new way? Is there a side of it we have not yet seen? Is it too obvious? Is it possible to twist it and turn it and make it something else? These are the kind of thoughts that should be going through your head every time a new theme is announced.

Submit your Challenge photographs into The-Yard-Collective Favourites: ‘JANUARY Challenge’ folder. The Challenge folder will be open for submissions between 1st and 21st of January. All submissions to that folder will be automatically approved ( ) without the regular voting system. There is no limit on how many photographs you can submit, so please, please, please; use your best judgment and consideration; if the quality of the submissions is awful, the number of submissions per member will be limited in the next Challenges. Submit only what you really consider to be good street photography.

You may submit old or new street photographs, although we highly encourage you to go out with your camera and shoot new photographs for each particular Challenge.
