There was a sawmill on the Kuusiluoto island in Tornio, Finland since 1901. Most of the employees were also living on the island and already in 1916 the population of the island was 450.
Then during the WWII the German army shot the island with its artillery on 4th October 1944 setting every place on fire. The fire destroyed the sawmill, the lumber yard, all houses, the school, the grocery store, etc. That ended the community of Kuusiluoto. Nowadays there are just a few ruins left anymore. I visited the Kuusiluoto island this summer by a boat. Satellite image of the location: [link] Featured [link] by Nikon D300 Nikkor AF-S VR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED @ 18mm © Jari Mäntylä 2009. |
